About the Program
The Missouri ALOT program began in 1983 as a method to develop the leadership potential of individuals in Missouri’s agricultural community. For over 40 years, ALOT's direction has been shaped by fundamental concepts of leadership and the guidance of seasoned agricultural professionals.
The mission of the Missouri ALOT program is, “To provide advanced leadership experiences that will make a positive impact to the future of agriculture and agribusiness in Missouri and beyond.” We do this by providing a two-year adult leadership training program targeted towards agricultural producers and rural leaders who have a passion to promote Missouri agriculture and strengthen their communities. The curriculum has been designed to expose each class member to the dynamics of politics, economics, social norms, communication, and agriculture.
The ALOT program includes nine in-state sessions, a weeklong seminar in Washington, D.C., and a two-week international experience to a country that impacts Missouri agriculture. The program enhances participants’ communication and leadership skills, expands their understanding of agricultural issues, encourages involvement and leadership initiative in their industry and communities, and connects participants to ALOT’s hundreds of alumni participants across Missouri. ALOT introduces participants to dozens more of Missouri’s innovative and involved citizens who offer their personal experiences and insights to help participants become more effective leaders.
Since 1983, over 500 men and women have completed the program. Program alums have gone on to serve as the Missouri Director of Agriculture, state and federal legislators, Chair of the National Pork Producers Council, Chair of the United Soybean Board, and CEO of the National Corn Growers Association. ALOT alums also serve as leaders on the boards and staffs of almost every agricultural organization in Missouri.
